This unfortunately happened on October 11th, 1988 when KC-135 crashed with 6 crew members and 10 passengers on board. Typical occurrences on Wurtsmith Air Force Base included planes flying in and out on missions. The majority of married enlisted and officers preferred to live on base because of the free daycare for children. Following cleanup, operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.
